Web Pick o' the Week

The 602 Club is long gone, but the Madison tavern lives on in the hearts of its many regulars and, now, on the World Wide Web.

A Madison keg-drainer who wishes to remain anonymous has poured his treasured memories into a charming Web tribute to the 602, a campus-area institution that for 50 years was a second home to a motley mix of students, poets, blue-collar workers and Downtown suit-and-tie types.

Packed with photos and nostalgic music clips, it takes a fairly up-to-date browser to get maximum effect from the site. Even those without multimedia capability will enjoy the prose, though, which includes a fine eulogy for the bar by this newspaper's Ron Seely and loving memories from the site's creator.

"It almost felt like it could become a home," the site creator writes, "and it did, for everyone who walked in and spent a moment to feel the honesty of the place."
